Pneumatics in Medical Devices: Why SMC Pneumatics USA and CareFusion are Perfect Partners

Posted by SMC Pneumatics USA on 8/6/2014 to CareFusion AVEA ventilator

CareFusion AVEA VentilatorWhat do pneumatics and medical devices have in common?

A lot, actually.

Without pneumatics in medical devices, advancements in healthcare wouldn’t be what they are today. In today’s medical field, ventilators keep adult and pediatric patients alive and breathing properly. Pneumatics in surgical robots help surgeons perform specialized surgical procedures.

One of the companies that utilize these components in its medical devices is CareFusion. They are a manufacturer that builds medical devices to help improve and lower the cost of healthcare. From respiratory care to surgical devices, CareFusion is passionate about helping those who provide the care to patients in hospitals, pharmacies, operating rooms and other medical settings.

To understand the importance of pneumatics and how they make medical devices run smoothly and more dependable, we asked them how their AVEA Ventilator uses these components.

How the AVEA Ventilator Uses Pneumatics

The CareFusion AVEA ventilator provides critical care ventilation for patients of all ages and sizes – from small children to adults. It also provides actionable data to help improve the processes for medical management and challenges in patient care.

The AVEA ventilator uses pneumatics to perform different functions, including putting components in the pathway – this area directly pushes air to the patient and other components to calibrate the valves in the pathway, to make sure the patient gets the proper amount of gases/air.

Initially, to construct the manifold that performs the calibration function, CareFusion went with a machined aluminum manifold. After the casings were sealed, testing resulted in a large percentage of failures. This required personnel to unseal the manifold and try to find where the leakage originated.

As you can imagine, the investment in time and manufacturing costs to find the leaks for these pneumatics in medical devices weighed heavily on CareFusion – they needed to find a better way to construct these valves, without failures and at a lower manufacturing cost.

SMC Pneumatics USA stepped in and helped CareFusion eliminate these issues with a bonded, acrylic manifold assembly, compared to the older aluminum-based component. In fact, over a timespan of 5 years, 120k valves were used to build out the manifolds and not one suffered a leak failure.

With the diffusion-bonded manifolds, SMC Pneumatics USA’s new pneumatics in medical devices solved specific problems for CareFusion’s AVEA ventilator.

Firstly, the new manifold was smaller, lighter and had less possibility of leak failures. This gave CareFusion increased dependability in their product line, plus first pass yields.

Before, CareFusion would assemble the manifolds on their own, which would require them to combine 3-4 separate parts in the aluminum casing. When they would develop failures, it would require them to dissemble all those parts to find the issue.  This was time-consuming and made them dependent on an separate part inventory.

With the new manifold, the component is prebuilt and pretested before CareFusion receives it. This improves manufacturing source responsibility to one vendor and reduces CareFusion’s costs, time on each component and part dependency.

Creating Better Outcomes for the Healthcare Industry

Since CareFusion strives to create better outcomes for its customers, the pneumatics in medical devices from SMC Pneumatics USA make medical devices highly dependable and reach customers faster. This is important since these products help hospitals; care facilities and other medical personnel care for their patients – sometimes in life and death situations.
